Re-made in America, fashion roundtable

Dr. Seymour was invited to a fashion roundtable organized by Daria Dorosh, Fashion Lab in Process at the American Folk Art Museum’s Branch Location at 2 Lincoln Square on February 10, 2011.

As Fashion Week begins at Lincoln Center, different sectors of the design community will come together to discuss how fashion is being changed by social consciousness, sustainability, and the fusion of fashion with technology. What will be the next evolution for fashion? Is sustainability compatible with technology? Meet the professionals who will discuss these important fashion trends and demonstrate them with examples of their work.

Speakers

Daria Dorosh, PhD, Director of Fashion Lab in Process, is an artist and adjunct faculty member at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NY, and SMARTlab, Digital Media Institute, University of East London, U.K.. She will lead the discussion on sustainability and wearable technology.

Shima Seiki is an international company that designs and produces eco-friendly WHOLEGARMENT computerized knitwear that has reframed cut-and-sew fashion.

Eileen Fisher is a company that promotes social consciousness, fair trade, and sustainability, whose mission is to design products that delight the spirit and simplify life.

Sarah Scaturro is a textile conservator at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, and Instructor in Fashion and Textile Studies MA at Fashion Institute of Technology, NY. She publishes internationally about the intersection of fashion, technology and sustainability.

Gayil Nalls, PhD is an artist, theorist, and pioneer of sensorial works, installations, environments and events. Her column, Sensoria: The sensory dimensions of art and culture, is online at psychologytoday.com.

Jose Marinez is a mobile, wearable technology strategist and designer, CEO of Awar3, a mobile software and hardware design house currently developing NFC communication environments.

Despina Papadopoulos is an interdisciplinary Interaction designer, the founder of studio 5050 and Principle Design, and a faculty member at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program.

Meiling Chen is an independent designer of Fearless Dreamer whose work explores the relationship between fashion, art, and visual design.

EKO-LAB is an independent, sustainable design house by Xing-Zhen Chung Hilyard and Melissa Kirgan.

Sabine Seymour, PhD, is a conceptual designer, entrepreneur, professor, researcher, and economist, is the CCO of her company, Moondial, which develops fashionable wearables and consults on fashionable technology to companies worldwide. She is director of Fashionable Technology Lab and Assistant Professor of Fashionable Technology at Parsons The New School for Design in New York.
